No Exclusions for Today’s Pilots

Today’s pilots and general aviation enthusiasts aren’t like the Wright Brothers! For one example, modern planes contain a universe of technology that hadn’t even been imagined when the brothers soared above Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. For another, today’s pilots have to follow extremely stringent safety protocols that weren’t even considered in 1903.

AOPA Insurance Services understands this. That’s why we’ve met firsthand with insurance companies — to educate them about general aviation activities and the needs of AOPA members. And we have worked diligently to make sure the AOPA-sponsored Group Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance Plan does not have any general aviation exclusions. The coverage is available only to AOPA members.

Read the Fine Print

Many accidental death insurance policies might cover only claims resulting from everyday activities — not from those relating to general aviation activities. This is important because such policies could limit the financial security they offer pilots and their families.

That’s why it’s important to read the fine print on such offers. Usually you can find what the policy doesn’t cover or pay benefits for under a section titled “Exclusions” or “Limitations.” Insurance companies are required to provide this information in their policies, certificates and marketing materials.

Valuable Financial Security for Your Family

Typically, Accidental Death (AD) or Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) policies provide high lump-sum benefits for an affordable rate. To make them more attractive, the insurance is usually issued without proof of good health. This means that to obtain the coverage, you don’t have to supply the insurance company with your health history and take any medical exams.

Many AOPA members complement their life insurance coverage with an Accidental Death (AD) or Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) policy. This coverage is designed to protect your family against the costs and future expenses they may face if an accident happens to you. While not meant to replace life insurance, such a policy can offer an easy and affordable way to help boost your family’s financial security, particularly if you have any health issues that could prevent obtaining additional life insurance.

Confidence in the Air

Even though it’s been more than 113 years since Wilbur and Orville Wright took their first flight, many insurance companies still limit benefits for aviators. You will not find this to be the case with the AOPA-sponsored Group Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance Plan. You can feel confident the plan covers claims that result from any type of general aviation activity.
