Making sure your out-of-pocket costs don't get out of handMaking sure your out-of-pocket costs don't get out of hand

If you rent or borrow an aircraft and are counting on the FBO or owner’s insurance policy to cover you in the case of an incident, you may want to consider your obligations. Most insurance policies have a deductible which the FBO or owner may require you pay for incidents caused while you were the pilot in command. A deductible is the amount you’ll pay out of your own pocket in the event of an accident.

Renter’s insurance provides coverage options that provide for this possibility. Some renter’s aircraft insurance policies will pay up to $5,000 of the owner’s or FBO’s deductible—even if you’re not at fault. This endorsement only applies if you have the Optional Coverage covering physical damage coverage on the policy. If you only have the Required Coverage, then no deductible coverage is allowed.
